Pregnancy Diary: Week 26

Toddler Potty Training
The toddler on the loo about 5 months ago...
As we usually have at the beginning of each week's pregnancy diary, here are the vital stats: baba is 23cm long, crown to rump, and weighs about 910g. What was a bulge is now becoming a bump for sure! Obviously these are estimates based on averages, but I suppose they are reasonably helpful to give an idea of size, especially considering my first was born at almost exactly average size.

It's been really hot here the last little while – temperatures in the mid thirties (Celsius) almost every day! I'm so glad I'm not full term right now! My first was born at the end of January (summer here in the South Africa) and I was so grateful for the December holidays – I don't think I would have been able to manage the 4 flights of stairs between my classroom and the admin block in the height of summer! It worked perfectly in that the day my maternity leave would have started (i.e. 2 weeks before my due date) was around the first day of school, so it was as though I had a month's extra time off before the birth. Good planning hey?

Having said all that I am really loving my aqua classes for exercise value and for cool-down value. What a pleasure after a sweltering day, especially considering it's nearing the end of the month and the fuel budget is running low so aircon is a rare luxury!

I'm just hoping it's bladder head butts and rib kicks rather than the other way around!

I had the weirdest sensation on Monday this week, in that all of a sudden I just felt HUGE. I also felt like my belly was stretched really tight, like that feeling when you've eaten far too much and you can't actually find a comfortable position to sit in. It wasn't a Braxton-Hicks contraction, and it wasn't that I had actually grown at all, and I wasn't swollen. I eventually figured out that baby had changed position, to a more vertical position and I think everything inside was just adjusting to its new spot! So rather than feeling left-right action, we are now getting bladder-ribs action. I'm just hoping it's bladder head butts and rib kicks rather than the other way around!

The toddler hasn't received much airtime recently, but I must say I am really enjoying her so much! She is talking so well that it makes life a lot easier when it comes to figuring out what she wants and being able to explain why she can't always have it (whatever it is) right now! I'm trying to put some positive parenting techniques into practice and it seems to be making this whole toddler experience a lot more pleasurable for both of us!

...she has been dry at night for almost 2 months now, except for 2 or 3 accidents...

Also, at 26 months old she has been dry at night for almost 2 months now, except for 2 or 3 accidents, and so we have been letting her sleep in undies with a waterproof pad under her. What a pleasure! And please don't ask me what the secret is, I have no clue, except perhaps for the idea that babies who use cloth nappies do tend to potty train an average of 6 months earlier. Bonus!

My innie has become an outie already, so I tell them it's the baby pressing on it from inside and they all think that's really cool!

Another snippet of toddler airtime while we're at it: She goes to a playgroup in the afternoons when I'm teaching ballet and usually when I get there the other kids want to 'touch the baby' and 'see the baby', so I pull my shirt up and they all pat my belly. It's very sweet! My innie has become an outie already, so I tell them it's the baby pressing on it from inside and they all think that's really cool! The first couple of times the toddler stood aside a little, not sure what to make of all this, but now she leads the 'pat parade' herself!
